FNST 203 in the Fall 2021 term

Course Times: Fridays 11:30-2:30pm (Sept. 8-Dec. 6)           Location: on-line

2021 course description:

This course will introduce students to the subject of TEK through literature, discussions, and guest lectures.  This is a university-based class that examines TEK as a discourse rather than at TEK as an overview of practices. As such, topics discussed in the class will include theoretical frameworks of TEK, how TEK can be approached, how it is used in policy and environmental regulations, as well its revitalization and protection.  This seminar-based class is founded on discussions of the readings, lectures, and diverse class-activities, thus participation and active engagement of students in the class is expected.  Due to Covid-19, the course will be offered entirely on-line, however, we will have a one-day fieldtrip (12pm-5/6pm) on Saturday, September 18, 2021 that will consist of an outside plant-knowledge walk, teachings, and additional activities. All safety measures must be followed during the trip, including social distancing and masks for indoor time.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • provide fantastic examples of cultural knowledge
  • define and demonstrate understanding the core course concepts and terms in a critical way
  • able to communicate their ideas effectively in both oral and written formats
